Tsukiji Outer Market

While the famous tuna auctions moved to Toyosu in 2018, Tsukiji’s Outer Market remains one of Tokyo’s most vibrant food destinations. Over 400 shops and stalls pack the narrow lanes, offering everything from the freshest sashimi you’ll ever taste to tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelette) cooked right before your eyes. The best strategy is to come hungry and graze your way through the market. Start with a cup of fresh oysters at one of the seafood stalls, grab a stick of grilled wagyu beef, then cool down with matcha ice cream or a fresh fruit daifuku from one of the sweets vendors. The portions are small and affordable, designed for eating while you walk. Beyond street food, Tsukiji is a working market where Tokyo’s chefs and home cooks shop for ingredients. Watch knife craftsmen sharpen blades, browse shops selling dried bonito flakes and premium seaweed, or pick up a handmade ceramic bowl to bring home. For the best experience, arrive early — between 7:00 and 9:00 AM — before the crowds build. Most shops close by early afternoon, and some are closed on Wednesdays and Sundays, so plan accordingly.
