Your insider guide to Japan’s most unforgettable experiences — crafted by someone who’s lived it, sold it, and loved every moment.
Why Journey Japan Exists
Japan is more than its temples and cherry blossoms. Behind every neighborhood, every season, and every train ride, there are experiences that can’t be captured in a typical travel guide — the roar of a packed baseball stadium on a Friday night, the quiet focus of a tea ceremony in a 400-year-old garden, the thrill of finding a hidden izakaya that only locals know about.
Journey Japan was created to help English-speaking travelers discover these moments. We focus on koto-shōhi (コト消費) — the Japanese concept of valuing experiences over things. Whether you’re planning your first trip or your fifteenth, our goal is to help you go beyond sightseeing and truly experience Japan.
About Ken Ninomiya
I’m Ken, the founder and writer behind Journey Japan. I was born and raised in Japan and have spent over 16 years working across the travel and aviation industries — on both sides of the Pacific.
Sales Planner at a major Japanese travel agency (3 years) — I designed and sold domestic and international tour packages, gaining deep knowledge of how the Japanese travel industry operates from the inside.
Japan tour specialist at a Los Angeles-based travel company (3 years) — Living and working in California, I helped American travelers plan their dream trips to Japan. This experience gave me a unique understanding of what English-speaking visitors want, what surprises them, and where they often miss out.
Corporate planning at a Japanese airline (~10 years) — In this role, I worked on route strategy, pricing, and business development. This decade of airline experience is why I can share genuinely useful, insider-level advice on finding the best flights to Japan.
What Makes Us Different
We don’t just write about Japan — we’ve worked in the industry that brings people there.
Most Japan travel blogs are written by expats or tourists. Journey Japan is different. With firsthand experience in tour planning, airline operations, and cross-cultural travel consulting, we offer a perspective you won’t find anywhere else:
- Airfare expertise — With nearly a decade at a Japanese airline, I understand how flight pricing works, when to book, and which routes offer the best value.
- NPB baseball insider — I’m a lifelong Japanese baseball fan. Our guides cover everything from tickets and stadium culture to the best seats, food, and chanting traditions.
- Bilingual & bicultural — As a native Japanese speaker who has lived and worked in the U.S., I bridge the gap between what’s written in Japanese and what English-speaking travelers need to know.
- Real industry knowledge — From tour packaging to airline strategy, my professional background means the recommendations on this site are grounded in how the travel industry actually works.
