Yanaka District
Yanaka is Tokyo’s time capsule — a quiet, low-rise neighborhood that survived both the 1923 earthquake and World War II bombings, preserving the atmosphere of old-town Tokyo that has vanished almost everywhere else. Walking here feels like discovering a secret the guidebooks forgot to mention.
Start at Yanaka Ginza, a charming retro shopping street where local shopkeepers have been serving the neighborhood for generations. Pick up freshly fried menchi-katsu (breaded meat cutlet), browse handmade craft shops, and watch the cats — Yanaka is famous for its stray cats, and you’ll spot cat-themed art and sculptures throughout the district.
The area is dotted with over 70 Buddhist temples, but they’re not tourist attractions — they’re living parts of the community, surrounded by quiet gardens and centuries-old graves. Yanaka Cemetery, one of Tokyo’s oldest, is surprisingly peaceful and even beautiful, especially during cherry blossom season when the trees form a pale pink canopy over the walking paths.
For the best experience, simply wander without a plan. Duck into a small gallery, have coffee in a renovated traditional house, or climb the steps of a temple you stumble upon. Yanaka rewards those who slow down.
